A conspiracy is a co-operation, often thought of as motivated by aggressive ends and conducted in secret. Conspiracies happen on all scales and in all kinds of social contexts. One example of a non-aggressive, but secret, conspiracy may be a family who gets up early to surprise a family member with breakfast in bed on his or her birthday.

In history, there are documented hostile conspiracies conducted secretly by public servants against the people. Present-time secret and hostile conspiracies by socially powerful individuals against the public are, quite naturally, suspected to be happening. People who try to uncover what they suspect to be hidden conspiracies are called conspiracy theorists.
