Death Squad

A Death Squad is a paramilitary unit that carries out assasinations and acts of terrorism, usually at the behest or with the implicit approval of the government, often against legitimate anti-government movements. The term is most strongly associated with Latin America, particularly El Salvador and Guatemala. In those cases, the squads were right-wing movements that were alleged to have been trained by US military adivsors. However, the practice of using armed vigilante groups to brutally kill political opponents dates back to classical times, when the reformist and populist Gracchi Brothers were seperately murdered by partisan authoritarian forces.
