Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a natural hallucinogenic drug, sometimes compared to LSD. The "hippie guru" Terrence McKenna is among those who often talked about the drug, for example describing how he met "entities" from taking the drug. DMT is a naturally occurring tryptamine and potent psychedelic drug, found not only in many plants, but also in trace amounts in the human body.

Legal Status

Since the Controlled Substances Act was enacted in 1971 by the United States the drug has been under federal control. At this time there is no approved medical use for the drug, though researchers can obtain it with the approval of both the FDA and DEA.

Effects

The effects of the drug are very short lived, in the area of 30 - 40 minutes.

  • Psychological effects include intense visual hallucinations, depersonalization, auditory distortions and an altered sense of time and body image.
  • Physiological effects include hypertension, increased heart rate, agitation, seizures, dilated pupils, involuntary movement of the eyes, dizziness and muscular in coordination.
  • At high doses, coma, respiratory arrest and death.
