John Sidney McCain III was born in 1936. John graduated from the United States naval Academy in 1958 at the age of 22. He became a naval aviator and flew attack aircraft from aircraft carriers. During the Vietnam War, he narrowly escaped death in the 1967 Forrestal fire. For five and a half years he was held as a prisoner of war by Vietnamese troops. While being held prisoner, he is known to have experienced torture. In 1981 Mr. McCain retired from the Navy and was elected to the United States House of Representatives the following year, as a Republican from Arizona. After two terms in the US House, he was elected into the U.S senate in 1986. He was succesfully re-elected in 1992, 1998, and 2004. John McCain ran for the presidentcy of the United States in 2008, where he was defeated by his rival, and fellow senator, Democrat Barack Obama (Illinois), with the Electoral College vote being 365-173 and a popular vote total of 69,456,897 to 59,934,814.
