[edit] GoatmanIn the summer of 1969, reports of a strange, two legged goatman came from the vicinity of Lake Worth in Texas. In the early AM on July 10th of that year, Mr. and Mrs. John Reichart and two other couples showed up at the police station with a fantastic tale. They said they had been parked on the edge of the lake around midnight when the beast attacked them by jumping on their car. They described it as walking on two legs, covered in both scales and fur, and appeared to be a cross between a goat and a man. Police raced to the scene, but found nothing. There was a long scratch on the eye witnesses auto, which he swore was from the creatures claw. Police were very concerned when they heard about this because there had been a few reports of a monster in the area over the last few months. But they had attributed it to pranks or jokesters. The police assumed that this was the case again, however the fact that it had attacked made them feel the need to act much more urgently. [edit] Sightings continueNearly 24 hours later the creature made another appearance, this time resulting in an extraordinary mass sighting. Jack Harris was driving to the Lake Worth Nature Center when he spotted the beast running up and down a hill. Soon it was being observed by almost 40 people, who had gathered to see if they could catch a glimpse of the monster after the newspaper, the [i]Fort Worth Star Telegram[/i] printed a front page headline about the goatman. Within minutes the local police were on the scene and saw the monster as well. When the mob began running towards the creature, it threw the wheel from a car and disappeard once again into the thicket. [edit] More sightingsIn the weeks that followed, armed posses were formed and searched the area for the beast. Many people now described as looking like a "big white ape." It was leaving tracks, but they were not preserved. They were reported as being 8 inches wide at the toes and 16 inches long. One account of a posse claimed to have shot the monster, and they followed the blood trail to the edge of Lake Worth where it apparently went into the water. Another party of three claimed to have tracked the creature closely without ever seeing it. They did report however that they heard the beasts unearthly cry and smelled a really foul odor which they associated with it. They also claim to have come across the carcasses of half eaten sheep that had had their necks wrenched. Many of the claims seem apparently to point many to believe that the Fort Worth monster was really a sasquatch or a bigfoot type of animal. Another three men said that the beast jumped on their car, and would not get off until they crashed the car into a tree. [edit] Fading into obscuritySightings of the monster continued for several years, but the last sighting of 1969 came from a man named Charles Buchanan. On November 7th, he said he was sleeping in the back of his pick-up truck when he was attacked by the monster. The terrified Buchanan shoved a bag of chicken at the creature. (!) It shoved the food into it's mouth, then took off for the lake. It jumped into the water and was last seen swimming toward Greer Island. [edit] Some theoriesSeveral theories surfaced to try and explain the creature in more mundane terms. A park ranger by the name of Harroll Rogers offered the idea that the Lake Worth Monster was a bobcat. This theory seems absurd by any stretch of the imagination. The most prevelant explantion was that the monster was a prankster in a costume. However this is problematic, as there were armed posses looking for it, and it was shot on at least one occassion. So if it was a human in an ape suit, the wearer was risking life and limb to get attention for something that he could take no credit for. As dangerous as it seems, this is the most widely accepted theory offered by skeptics. Believers feel that the monster was either some type of [sasquatch]] or [bigfoot]], while others feel it was a unique creature, based on the description that the creature had both fur and scales. Others think it could have been an alien from another world, but this theory like many others offered are purely speculation. Some skeptics feel that the sightings were the result of mass hysteria.
