Lee Harvey Oswald (October 18, 1939 – November 24, 1963) was the presumed assassin of John F Kennedy and presumed killer of Officer J D Tippit.

History

Born in New Orleans, he spent much of his youth in Texas and attended high school in Dallas. In 1956 he enlisted in the Marines and served until 1959. Later in 1959, he went to the Soviet Union and declared his intention to renounce his American citizenship.

In 1962 he returned to the United States with his Russian wife, Marina, and daughter. After moving around the country, Oswald finally settled in Texas. While in Texas, Oswald held several jobs before finally settling a job at the Texas School Book Depository in October, 1963--mere weeks before the assassination.

Assassination events

The 1964 Warren Commission report on the John F. Kennedy assassination concluded that at 12:30 P.M. on November 22 Oswald shot Kennedy from a window on the sixth floor of the warehouse as the President's motorcade passed through Dallas' Dealey Plaza.

Shortly after the assassination, Oswald was taken into custody after being subdued in the Dallas Theatre. He was arrested and later appeared on television claiming to be innocent of any crime and a patsy.

On Sunday, November 24, 1963, Oswald was killed by Jack Ruby. The fatal shooting occurred in the basement of the Dallas Police Department.

It is widely debated whether or not Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman in the murder of President Kennedy.
