In 1832 at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, William Huntington Russell and Alphonso Taft who were pledges of Phi Beta Kappa founded a secret society known as Skull and Bones. The very first Skull and Bones class, or "cohort," as it was more commonly known started officially the very next year, 1832-33. The group was made up from 15 Yale seniors. At first the members were strictly all male but in 1992 they started admitting woman against the protests of notable alumni.

In accordance with tradition the Yale Daily News used to publish the names of all newly ‘tapped’ members of the various secret societies at the school at the time, but in recent times this was stopped due to press coverage about the organization. The society's current membership and activities are now not disclosed to the public. The Skull and Bones society only inducts incoming seniors, during the late junior year prior to their graduation.

The Skull and Bones society also goes under the corporate name of the Russell Trust Association, the trustees were exempt in 1943 from having to file corporate reports with the Connecticut secretary of state. In 1999 it was reported that they had assets of around $4,133,246. They also own an island that was given to them by one of their early benefactor families, this island is Deer Island.

Members

Many people are under the impression that the society members were kept hidden but in fact you can view the list in Yale universities archives. They show you the member from 1833-1985, with some additional years. Some names of prominent families were leaked to a researcher called Antony C. Sutton by an ex Skull and Bones member. He kept the list secret for nearly 15 years until he had the list redrafted and it was finally published in the book Fleshing out Skull and Bones by editor researcher, and writer Kris Millegan, who published it in 2003.

President George Bush and Senator John Kerry are Skull and Bones members; it was reported that President Bush appointed society members in his administration in his first term. Various congressmen and U.S senators plus past presidents all had members of the society at various positions in their cabinets.
