The Thunderbird is a creature of legend in the history and culture of the North American indigenous people. It is considered to be a supernatural animal that represents power and strength. It’s main focus of importance lies in the art, songs, and history of many of the Pacific Northwest Coast cultures, but is also prominent in several forms among the people of the American Southwest and The Great Plains.

Background

The creature received the name Thunderbird due to the belief that when it beat it’s wings, it caused thunder and stirred the wind.

Although there are different forms, for the most part the Thunderbird carries the same descriptions throughout most of the North American indigenous cultures. It is generally described as a large bird that is capable of creating storms as it flies. It is also said that lightning flashes from its eyes when it blinks. In the many masks made of the creature, it is depicted as many –colored, with two horns, and usually teeth within its beak.
