War on TerrorFrom TinWiki.org
This also meant funds were diverted from exisiting areas to fund the war. The war in Iraq and Afghanistan is estimated to cost $12.3 billion a month or about $17 million an hour. New targets are considered in the war on terrorism every day. The primary focus of the U.S.-led coalition is hunting down the remnants of al Qaeda and Taliban forces in Afghanistan.
[edit] IraqOne thing that was used to attack Iraq was the war on terror where the president tried to convince that attacking Iraq was an attack on AL Qaeda There was never any solid evidence that Al Qaeda was involved with Iraq although some speculate that it hurt the organization. The belief that Sadam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction was the main reason for the invasion of Iraq. No WMD's were ever obtained. According to Tony Blair on April 10, 2002, "Saddam Hussein's regime is despicable, he is developing weapons of mass destruction, and we cannot leave him doing so unchecked. He is a threat to his own people and to the region and, if allowed to develop these weapons, a threat to us also." Contrary to this Tony Blair admitted on September 28, 2004 that,"The evidence about Saddam having actual biological and chemical weapons, as opposed to the capability to develop them, has turned out to be wrong. I acknowledge that and accept it. I simply point out, such evidence was agreed by the whole international community, not least because Saddam had used such weapons against his own people and neighboring countries. And the problem is, I can apologize for the information that turned out to be wrong, but I can't, sincerely at least, apologize for removing Saddam. The world is a better place with Saddam in prison not in power. I can apologize for the information being wrong but I can never apologize, sincerely at least, for removing Saddam. The world is a better place with Saddam in prison." [edit] Axis of evilUsing the war on terror as a reason the president was also able to launch the Axis of evil which he defined as countries that armed terrorist groups. These countries included Iraq, Iran, and North Korea. North Korea was removed from the axis of evil on June, 27 2008 on the agreement that North Korea dismantle all of its nuclear facilities and resolve outstanding questions on its highly enriched uranium and proliferation activities “in a way that we can fully verify”. [edit] Terrorist Watch ListThe terrorist watch list hit one million names on 7/14/2008 according to the ACLU. The watch list is growing by approximately 20,000 names a month.
Some people listed on the terrorist watch list include Nelson Mandela, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and a household name all over the world, nonetheless is listed on the U.S. watch list and needs special permission to enter the United States. Evo Morales, president of Bolivia. Name found on list obtained by 60 Minutes. Saddam Hussein. Although he was imprisoned in Baghdad and in U.S. custody at the time, his name was also found in the database obtained by 60 Minutes. Again, this accomplishes nothing except ensnaring the innocent, diluting the list, and wasting the time of security workers. U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy (D, Mass.) After repeated delays at airport security, the senator had trouble getting removed from the airline watch list despite calls to Homeland Security and eventually a personal conversation with the Secretary of DHS.
