Presidency

McKinley ran as a Republican in the 1896 election and assumed office on March 4th 1897. He was further elected to a second term in the 1900 election, though his second term was cut short upon his death. His Vice President Theodore Roosevelt then assumed the office as the 26th President.

Assassin

Leon Frank Czolgosz rented an apartment near where McKinley would be speaking at the Pan-American Exposition and stood in a receiving line where people waited to shake the presidents hand. He had a .32 caliber pistol wrapped in a handkerchief concealed in his jacket pocket. As he reached the front of the line McKinley extended his hand only to have it slapped away by Czolgosz. He then shot McKinley twice at point blank range.

After a trial that lasted only 8 1/2 hours he was sentenced to death and executed in the electric chair on October 29, 1901.

Oddly, the assassin's body was dissolved in acid [1]
