On the H5N1 Virus (Bird Flu)

A Fall 2007 study conducted by UW-Madison virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka, documented an early warning that flu viruses may be beginning to outwit highly effective drugs. His team found a single change in a viral protein would allow H5N1 to infect the upper respiratory system in mammals. The adaptation could enable the virus to infect a wider range of cell types and spread more easily among humans.
